Vermont Fish and Wildlife is urging the public to help turtles on the roadway this spring. Female turtles are looking for places to lay their eggs and each year many are killed by motor vehicles especially near ponds, rivers and wetlands. Most can be picked up and be carried across the road to safety. Turtles must be at least 10 years old before they reproduce. Snapper turtles (with long necks) are large and lack colorful lines, spots or other markings and do bite. They can be moved on cardboard or by using a shovel. When helping the turtles, make sure you place them in the direction they were heading.
